SUMMARY:Jean Brett Lecture: Huzzah! Drinking with John Hancock during the American Revolution (Members and Guests Only)
DESCRIPTION:Jean Brett Lecture Series\, Brooke Barbier author of King Hancock presents “Huzzah! Drinking with John Hancock during the Revolution” followed by cocktails including a feature drink and hearty appetizers\, book sale & signing. \n______________________________________________________________________________________ \nWhen John Hancock needed to win people over\, he didn’t talk about resisting taxes or policy improvements; instead\, he served alcohol. He offered rum punch and wine at his home and paid for lavish meals in taverns to bring people together. Guests included lower class men\, French officers\, and Black women and men. By throwing parties\, Hancock gained social and political power among myriad groups\, which repeatedly paid dividends. He was consistently elected to political office and when he smuggled madeira into Boston\, one of the most memorable and violent mobs during colonial resistance defended him. In this forty-minute talk\, Brooke Barbier will present lively and evocative stories and images that illuminate the critical and complex role that alcohol and taverns played in the social\, political\, and cultural fabric of the American Revolution and how John Hancock used them to his advantage. \n_______________________________________________________________________________________ \nBrooke Barbier is a public historian with a doctorate in American history from Boston College. She is the author of two books: King Hancock: The Radical Influence of a Moderate Founding Father\, which the Wall Street Journal called “engaging” and “highly readable\,” and Boston in the American Revolution: A Town versus an Empire. She founded and operates Ye Olde Tavern Tours\, a popular guided outing along Boston’s renowned Freedom Trail.

SUMMARY:Members only: Christmas luncheon and lecture
DESCRIPTION:Join fellow Dames for a lecture and luncheon at this annual members-only event. \nSee below to reserve your spot and to learn more about Ken Torino’s lecture\, “Deck the Halls: Female Abolitionists and Christmas.” RSVP now\, tickets always sell out! \n  \n  \n“Deck the Halls: Female Abolitionists and Christmas” \nWhat we think of as the traditional trappings of Christmas celebrations were just beginning in the first half of the nineteenth century. New England’s female abolitionists played a large role in the development of modern American Christmas traditions. In fact they were the leaders. These abolitionists\, including Maria Chapman\, Lydia Marie Child\, and Abby Kelly hosted anti-slavery society Christmas Fairs – one of the earliest traditions associated with Christmas in America. It was at these fairs that most Americans in the first half of the nineteenth century encountered a Christmas tree. The female abolitionists also promoted the idea of gift giving at their fairs\, a central part of our traditions today. These woman created strong networks of woman that stretched across the then United States and into Europe. They promoted abolitionism while creating goods for sale and organizing the fairs. All this helped move woman out of the designated domestic sphere of the home (not without controversy) into the economy\, changing forever the role of woman in society. These were both white and black woman with organizations like the African American\, Female Abolitionist Society of Philadelphia and closer to home Salem\, Massachusetts. These societies contributed time and goods to Christmas fairs to raise money for the abolitionist cause. Christmas fairs had a wide-ranging influence on our current customs\, including the use of Christmas trees\, greenery in decorating\, and gift giving in America.

SUMMARY:Members Only: Dames exclusive walking tour of Beacon Hill with Hub Town Tours
DESCRIPTION:Join fellow Dames on a walking tour of Beacon Hill with Prescott House’s tour partner\, Hub Town Tours. \nThis tour will bring you into the must-see neighborhood of Beacon Hill\, home to 19th-century mansions\, cobblestone alleys\, and Underground Railroad stops. As you stroll past all fourteen official landmarks on the Black Heritage Trail\, hear true tales of incredible courage from the abolitionist movement prior to the American Civil War. Along the way\, learn about Bostonians’ central role in the “Second Revolution”—a decades-long struggle for freedom by Americans\, Black and white\, who defied 19th-century racial enslavement by demanding liberty and justice for all across the United States of America. \nThis is a fantastic opportunity to meet the Hub Town Tours team while learning about history in your own backyard. \nThe tour will meet at Prescott House and will last for approximately 2.5 hours. Bring comfortable walking shoes and a water bottle! \nClick here to learn more about Hub Town Tours.

SUMMARY:Members and guests only: Lecture by Author William Martin
DESCRIPTION:Dames and invited guests are welcome to join the NSCDA-MA for a rousing lecture by author William Martin on his latest book\, December 41.\nOn the day after Pearl Harbor\, shocked Americans gather around their radios to hear Franklin Roosevelt declare war. In Los Angeles\, a German agent named Martin Browning is planning to kill FDR on the night he lights the National Christmas Tree. \nWho will stop him? Relentless FBI Agent Frank Carter? Kevin Cusack\, a Hollywood script reader who also spies on the German Bund of Los Angeles\, and becomes a suspect himself? Or Vivian Hopewell\, the aspiring actress who signs on to play Martin Browning’s wife and cannot help but fall in love with him? \nFrom New York Times bestselling author William Martin comes a WWII thriller as intense as The Day of the Jackal and as gripping as The Eye of the Needle. In December ’41\, Martin takes us on the ultimate manhunt\, a desperate chase from Los Angeles to Washington\, D. C.\, in the first weeks of the Second World War. \n  \nA light lunch will be served after the talk.\n  \nSnow date: February 9
