SUMMARY:Warriors and Dames Dinner\, the Union Club
DESCRIPTION:Join the us as Massachusetts Warriors and Dames come together for our joint annual dinner in March. Our speaker\, MIT urban design expert Brent D. Ryan\, will give remarks exploring the design histories of three English colonial cities—New Haven (1638)\, Philadelphia (1682)\, and Savannah (1733). While their plans drew on established precedents and were alike in featuring rectilinear street grids\, civic buildings\, and open squares\, each city’s configuration was also unique and exemplary. Professor Ryan will discuss how these three cities developed over time\, trace their influence on subsequent urban planning\, and show how today’s urbanists continue to draw from the creative ideas of their colonial English predecessors. A graduate of Yale University\, Brent D. Ryan earned his M. Arch. from Columbia and holds a Ph.D.in urban design and planning from MIT. Among his many books and articles are The Largest Art: A Measured Manifesto for a Plural Urbanism (2017)\, Design After Decline: How America Rebuilds Shrinking Cities (2012). \nRegistration deadline is Friday\, March 15.  \nTickets can be purchased here. \n
