DESCRIPTION:Please join us for the opening event of the 2023-2024 Dames season! \n  \nMaking Millinery Work: Charting the Successes & Hardships of Entrepreneurial Women in the Nineteenth Century \nGiven by NSCDA-MA Collections Manager Liz Weisblatt \n  \nExpanding upon research from By Her Own Design: Women Milliners of Boston\, this lecture will explore millinery work as a source of independence for women in the nineteenth century through primary sources\, the stories of women milliners\, and the incredible hats they made. \n  \nLecture to be followed by an elegant box lunch and an opportunity to tour the exhibition before it closes on September 22. \n  \n_______________________________________________________________________________________________ \n  \nElizabeth Weisblatt is a dress historian with more than five years of experience working with historical textiles. After receiving her master’s degree in Dress & Textile History from the University of Glasgow\, she returned to Boston\, MA\, sharing her knowledge of dress history through house museums in Beacon Hill. Her focus on social history has allowed her to discover several avenues of interest including stories of the makers of garments and immigrant interaction with new American styles.

DESCRIPTION:Fall is officially here! Celebrate with us at Martin House Farm Sunday\, September 24 from 1-4 pm for Cider Demo Day provided by Spencer Morris of Sowams Cider Works from Warren RI. He will be pressing apples from his very own Long Lane Orchard and offering samples of his apple juice. \nWhile there\, be sure to visit Carol Gafford from Swansea Public Library for storytelling on the 1/2 hour along with a sampling of her homemade apple butter served with gingersnaps. Don’t miss out on surprise crafts and colonial recipes to bring home. \nSpeaking of recipes\, be sure to visit the Swansea Boys Scouts tent and table busily baking brownies and cornbread as they demonstrate Dutch oven cooking in charcoal pans.
